Engineers apply the principles of science and 数学 to 开发 economical solutions to technical problems. Their work is the link between scientific discoveries and the commercial applications that meet societal and consumer needs.

- Specify the functional requirements precisely

Engineers use 电脑 extensively to produce and analyze 设计s; to simulate and test how a machine, 结构, or system operates; to generate specifications for parts; to monitor the quality of products; and to 控制 the efficiency of processes. 纳米技术, which involves the creation of high-performance materials and components by integrating atoms and molecules, also is introducing entirely new principles to the 设计 process.

Chemical Engineers apply the principles of chemistry to solve problems involving the 生产 or use of chemicals and other products. They 设计 equipment and processes for large-scale chemical manufacturing, plan and test methods of manufacturing products and treating byproducts, 监督生产.
Chemical engineers also work in a variety of manufacturing industries other than chemical manufacturing, 比如那些产生能量的, 电子产品, 食物, 服装, 和纸. 除了, they work in healthcare, biotechnology, and business services. Although the terms electrical and 电子产品 engineering often are used interchangeably in academia and industry, electrical engineers traditionally have focused on the generation and supply of power, whereas 电子产品 engineers have worked on applications of electricity to 控制 systems or signal processing. 电 engineers specialize in areas such as power systems engineering or electrical equipment manufacturing.
